Online first aid courses

Northwest Territories workplaces fall under the Safety Act (RSNWT 1988, c. S-1) and its Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, Part 5, enforced by the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC): the number and level of first-aiders follow a risk assessment based on workers per shift and site remoteness, with work-site first-aiders required to hold an Intermediate or Advanced qualification. Certificates are valid for 3 years and online courses are accepted.

Northwest Territories childcare is governed by the Early Learning and Child Care Regulations (R-098-2024, in force 15 Nov 2024) under the Early Learning and Child Care Act, s.60(1), requiring every ELCC staff person to hold both a first-aid certification and an infant and child CPR certification from a program approved by the Director. It is overseen by the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, and online courses are accepted.

In the Northwest Territories, the Emergency Medical Aid Act (RSNWT 1988, c. E-4) rules out liability for damages from the acts or omissions of a person who voluntarily and without expectation of compensation provides emergency medical services or first aid at the immediate scene, unless there is gross negligence. It covers both health professionals and laypersons, there is no legal duty to rescue, and lay AED use falls under this general immunity as there is no dedicated defibrillator statute.

Nurses in the Northwest Territories are regulated by the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN) and must attest annually to a Continuing Competency Plan built around two learning goals, with roughly 10% of members audited each year; physicians are regulated through the territorial Health and Social Services registrar. Clinically relevant training such as BLS or CPR can count among the plan's learning activities and a current certificate is generally an employer requirement rather than a licensing condition.

In the Northwest Territories, long-term-care homes and home-care services are staffed by Personal Support Workers, and Aurora College's PSW program requires a Standard First Aid/CPR-C certificate. First-aid certification is generally expected of care aides in these settings, met by a recognized, up-to-date certificate that supplements occupational training and is renewed periodically.

In the Northwest Territories, foster homes are approved under the Child and Family Services Act following a home assessment and background checks, and a current first-aid and CPR certificate from a recognized organization is commonly required or arranged through caregiver training. It is expected under agency practice rather than a single explicit statutory clause and is confirmed by the territorial child and family services worker handling the approval.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in the Northwest Territories for personal knowledge, childcare licensing, and employer requirements, with certification valid for 3 years. The practical portion of CSA levels is normally completed in person.
